2021
In a section of the De officiis, Book i, Cicero deals with the justice of warfare. He asserts that the enemies defeated who were not cruel and savage should be spared, so the maiores utterly destroyed Carthage and Numantia (i 35). In i 38 Cicero refers to the wars undertaken by Romans, distinguishing the ones waged de imperio (as the Punic wars) from the others fighted uter esset (as the wars against Celtiberi and Cimbri): the first must be fought less cruelly, but Cicero justifies the destruction of Carthage with the sentence Poeni foedifragi, crudelis Hannibal, reliqui iustiores, probably containing a quotation from Ennius’s Annales. These passages, examined in comparison with historical …
New investigations in the North-East quarter of Motya. The archaic cemetery and Building J
2017
In June 2013 the University of Palermo excavations on Motya were resumed. The main goal of the new project is to investigate the north-east quarter of the Phoenician settlement and its urban development since the time of its foundation. Two main areas of excavation were opened. In the early cemetery sixteen cremation burials of the archaic period were uncovered. The most striking discoveries, never attested before, were a tomb containing Hellenistic offerings, and the occurrence of archaic infant cremations. The second excavation was conducted east of Zone K in Building J, which is characterized by its use of a fine ‘pier and rubble’ construction technique. Two rooms have been partially cle…
Carthage's military installations of the First Punic War on Monte Pellegrino (Palermo)
2019
The excavation in the park of Villa Belmonte (Monte Pellegrino, Palermo) has brought to light several warehouses, made with a “pseudo-frame” technique, probably with a straw roof, used for the storage of foodstuffs, given the large quantity of Punic-type amphorae found in situ, datable to around the middle of the third century BC. In addition, a section of road - about 3 m wide that proceeds in the direction of WNW- ESE, consisting of two layers of use - has been intercepted. We believe to have tracked down part of a strategic/military station used by the Carthaginian army during the crucial years of the First Punic War.

This paper documents the fortuitous discovery of a silver fraction, possi…
2018
The excavations in Capo Soprano country at Gela (1999-2001) have hallowed to recover a living quarter, in which was a hoard of 17 bronze coins of Punic Sicily with female head and horse in front of palm-tree. The stratigraphic excavation of the quarter has permitted to find two living phases, sealed by collapsed roofs and walls. The excavation has supplied information concerning the relative chronology of the layers and the walls, while the stratigraphic association between pottery and coins offers information concerning the absolute chronology. These elements also make it possible to consider the siege of Gela by Agathokles (317-309 B.C.) as the terminus ante quem for the ancient phase. Si…
